Mesta village is located just 35 klm from Chios town and it has been declared a preserved medieval monument and its appearance, that looks like a fortress.
It has remained unchanged and unspoiled over the centuries. The houses were built one right next to the other, creating a protective wall.
The streets are cobbled and narrow, creating a kind of labyrinth. It is located in small, valleys far from the sea.
The gray houses had doors and windows that faced only the interior of the wall. The outer walls contained parapets with small towers at the corners and gates at 2-3 points.
The people of Mesta still preserve the traditions of the 14th century village.
he village’s most important custom takes place during the carnival festivities where the “Agas” trials, a satirical celebration that used to take place under the Turkish Occupation.
The unique village is well known for its unique wine “Mestousiko” which is actually one of the best wines of Chios and “souma” a drink that is produced by the distillation of figs and grapes. It is a drink for heavy drinkers, but pure and with a particular amazing flavor.
