The rainstorm hit the center of the city of Thessaloniki around 12:30 Thursday noon with a force of 200 mm per hour. It lasted about one hour.By 2 0′ clock the Fire Service had received more than 300 calls to pump water from basements and businesses, by 4 pm the number of calls had surpassed 450.
Even the landmark of the city, the White Tower was flooded. The fire service had to evacuate tourists, a school class and employees, more than 70 people.
Due to the heavy lightning, refueling of airplanes at the Macedonia airport was interrupted for several minutes and flight had small delays.
